Blog Assignment 1

Mrs. Joe

Mrs. Joe is portrayed as an obnoxious human being. She is controlling, cruel, unfair, and abuser. Pip describes Mrs. Joe as a person who is desperate for control, and the way she does this is controlling Joe her husband by knocking him around and fighting with him. Mrs. Joe is a cruel and unjust person. From Pip's point of view, you can understand that he does not actually like his sister. Through this quote it is clear that Pip has some empathy for Mr. Joe, because Mrs. Joe as also abused Pip. It shows how Pip and Joe are to some extent, friends. Pip feels guilty because Joe is taking the punishment for Pip's actions. Mrs. Joe obviously does not respect her husband, because she treats him like he is absolute garbage.

  1. I disagree with your description of Mrs. Joe as a “cruel and unjust person.” She has suffered throughout her life and as a result, has had to become tough in order to protect herself. Fear is one of the few emotions that Mrs. Joes has experienced in her life, stemming from the death of her parents and siblings. So, fear is one of the few tools she uses to control her husband and youngest brother. I believe that Mrs. Joes respects her husband, but does not know how to express it and that her actions towards Pip and her husband Joe are justified because of the horrible events that she experienced in her life.

  4. I agree that Mrs. Joe is terribly cruel and abuses both Joe and Pip. Joe and Pip can empathize with each other because they are both subject to the same abusive behavior by Mrs. Joe. It seems to logical to me that they formed a friendship.

  5. Mrs. Joe is portraited as a very short tempered and mean human being. Pip also sees her in this way, but that doesn't mean he doesn't like her. Pip loves his sister. She can be unreasonable and it somtimes looks like she treats Pip and Mr. Joe like garbage, but both of them love her and they have learned to deal with her tantrums. Pip feels bad for the way Joe is treated by Mrs. Joe somtimes, and he knows that Mr. Joe is going to just sit there and take it becuase he loves her. Mrs. Joe can be cruel and short- tempered, but Pip and Mr. Joe deal with it because they love her.

  6. Mrs. Joe seems very cruel, unreasonable, and short tempered. She is disrespectful and in the book it seems like she hates Joe and Pip. It also seems like Pip and Joe hate her. This is not true. Pip and Joe love Mrs. Joe and Mrs. Joe loves them. She's Pip's sister and Joe's wife. If they hated eachother, then Joe wouldn't have married Pip's sister. Mrs. Joe does have issues, but Pip and Joe deal with it because they love her despite the way Dickens shows it to the reader.
